Earlier this week, Amazon released an update for the Kindle Scribe, the e-reader and digital book suite. The update brings many new features and improvements to the Note taking experience. Not to be outdone, ReMarkable has released an update for its reMarkable 2 e-ink printer. 

If you have a ReMarkable 2, you can check for pending software updates by opening the Menu from the main screen, selecting Settings and clicking on Update in the Software section and following the Check for Updates. I’m still participating in the beta program, but I’m currently running Version 3.3.2.1666 with no updates.

ReMarkable Version 3.3 has many improvements and new features. For example, you can bold any of your typed text when using the ReMarkable Type Folio keyboard and tablet. That looks great, but I don’t have a Folio Type, and I haven’t used reMarkable companion apps to type notes. 

Also new in 3.3 is the ability to delete your recipient list when you recently emailed a document. Again, I don’t email anyone, so I can’t say how good this change is — but as someone who likes a good digital experience, it’s worth having a way to noise cancellation. 

What I’m really excited about, and I’ve used it many times while in beta, is the ability to go back to the standard 100% zoom level when taking notes. 

I can’t tell you how many times I sit down to take notes during a phone call or a meeting, and somehow, my hand moves across the screen as I write. when the page is zoomed or scrolled. there is no reason. It might seem like a minor issue, but before the 3.3 update, you couldn’t easily go back to the default view.

Instead, you’re left to pinch, zoom and scroll until you think it’s close. Or like I often do, exit the notebook and go back in, wasting time and possibly losing notes (not to mention distracting yourself from the task at hand). 

This experience was so frustrating that I stopped writing notes on ReMarkable 2 for a few months. In fact, I bought an iPad Mini and use it as a digital note taking machine. 

In the end, I gave the ReMarkable 2 another shot and tried to minimize the accidental touches along the way. 

With the latest update, if I zoom in or out, I can go back to the default view with a quick click of the button that appears at the top of the screen. That simple addition eliminated almost all of my major complaints about ReMarkable 2.

Oh, but there’s more. At the bottom of the release notes is a quick note that the update is also fixing the touch pointers, which is why I had problems with zooming and scrolling in the first place. Well, since installing the beta I haven’t experienced any kind of random scrolling or zooming.

Unlike traditional tablets, with glass screens and back displays, the reMarkable 2 uses e-ink technology, which is also found in Kindle e-readers. Write on the screen with a reMarkable marker, and your handwriting will appear under your pen-screen, as if you were writing on paper.

As you’d expect, reMarkable 2 faithfully recreates the feeling of writing notes on wood pulp. The tablet’s matte textured surface, combined with the lack of surface glare and a very responsive refresh rate creates a truly seamless writing experience. 

The built-in stylus (choose for pointing and for a useful “eraser”, you can rub the tip of the stylus on the display to erase mistakes) runs across the display with the correct degree of friction, it registers 4,096 levels. of pressure sensitivity, for natural-looking strokes. 

So how can a £429 device be better than just writing on paper with a 99p biro? If you’re a regular note taker, always handing out your work, and prone to losing your notes, the tablet will come into its own. But how does it compare to a Kindle printer? We’ll test both devices to find out.

We’ve been writing on the Kindle printer for months, and the reMarkable 2 for three weeks, to compare and contrast the digital notebooks. We used each person to take many notes in meetings and presentations, in the office, at home and when we traveled to conferences. We sign a lot of contracts as part of our work, so being able to easily transfer PDFs to a notepad for signing is a big part. You can create separate notebooks, organize them into folders, and choose from templates like rule sheets and graph sheets, as well as to-do list checkboxes. This device focuses on being a digital notepad rather than a desktop or e-reader. Although you can transfer epub book files to the tool and convert web pages to PDF for later reading, it’s a very simple process, and for web pages, it doesn’t work well. You can take notes, but, at that time, you can use the whole laptop or just the tablet.

At this point, it seems easy to fix some weaknesses. You can’t search your handwritten notes, so if you don’t bother to organize your files, your important information can be buried somewhere on page 12 of the fifth notebook. Handwriting conversion is not always accurate, especially if your handwriting is bad and often requires some correction. No matter where the sign is attached to the floor, it cannot be fixed and therefore, it is lost.
