With an eSIM, instead of using a small plastic SIM card to transfer your phone number to your iPhone, you use a non-physical SIM card that is inserted directly into the device. iPhone 14 does not have a SIM card slot at all; it just doesn’t exist.
If you’re upgrading to the new iPhone 15, the process to convert your SIM card to an eSIM is different, but the process is generally simple. Before the release of iPhone 15, we will explain what eSIM is and teach you how to install it.
A SIM card is used by phone manufacturers and wireless carriers as a type of handshake that lets the carrier know which phone you’re using, and in turn tells it which phone number and carrier to use.

An eSIM, a digital version of a small plastic SIM card, can be programmed and reprogrammed as many times as needed. According to Apple, iPhone eSIM users can store up to eight different eSIM cards, which is handy if you travel frequently or have multiple lines of business.
Setup for iPhone 15 makes switching from a physical SIM to an eSIM a simple process. When you order your iPhone, your carrier and phone number will be associated with that device. So, in theory, the iPhone 15 should be ready to go through the eSIM carrier activation process.
As Apple notes, “Setting up your eSIM card is usually just a matter of turning on your new iPhone and following the on-screen instructions.”
When you turn on your new iPhone and go through the Quick Start process, you’ll see a screen similar to the image at the top of the article asking you to confirm that you want to activate your phone number on your iPhone.
