It doesn’t have a battery or power source, so it seems strange to talk about the energy consumption of an HVAC filter. But air filters can actually be one of the biggest energy consumers in your home. Filters use energy by creating resistance to the air flow of the HVAC system. This resistance is known as pressure drop and means that the fan has to work harder to move the same amount of air. If we can reduce the pressure of the filter configuration, we can reduce the fan speed and save HVAC energy and money. In fact, it is estimated that reducing the pressure by 1 pascal can reduce energy consumption by 11 kWh or costs from €2 to €3 per year, depending on your local energy costs.
Fortunately, comparing air filters with an energy efficiency scheme managed by Eurovent is quick and easy. Eurovent 4/21 follows the format used for refrigerators, televisions and other consumer goods. The program uses independently tested performance data to rank air filters from A+ (best) to E (worst).
Air filters are classified by ISO 16890 rating; Lower filter classes provide greater energy efficiency.

I currently run an organization called the Center for Energy and Clean Air Research, which provides evidence, data research to people working for clean energy and clean air around the world. We cover China, India, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Europe and have a project investigating Russia’s fossil fuel exports and their contribution to the invasion of Ukraine.
Okay, so what we’re going to do now is fly into these different areas. And I think we should provide some context, which is: you and I met when we were in Beijing because you were conducting or doing the most extraordinary research on China at the time. And you were using statistics and data that most people can’t interpret: You speak Mandarin Chinese. And your output was incredibly insightful. So the context here is China, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Russia etc. I doubt you have anything important to say about it. So we’re going to go through these different areas.
