Temu has attracted legions of customers since its launch here. Research by Roy Morgan in March this year found that 1.26 million Australians buy property each month, with domestic sales alone on track to reach $1.3 billion this year.
Temu is available in almost 50 countries around the world, but Whale Co Inc. (company name by which it is known) lists its location in Ireland – a popular base for international technology companies.
Experts say that a strong marketing strategy has played an important role in Temu’s rapid rise, and this is reflected when you talk to users.

Between November and December 2023, it surveyed more than 500 people who had bought things from Temu, and asked them how they first heard about the platform.
Nearly 37% said they first learned about it through some form of advertising, while 27% said it was featured on a social media account they followed.
Temu’s designs have turned out to be hugely popular – within months of launching here, it’s become one of the most popular in Australia. At the time of writing, it is still leading the Google Play and Apple app charts.
Dr Shasha Wang from Queensland University of Technology’s business school says another reason for Temu’s popularity is the unique experience it delivers to users.

For example, Temu’s smartphone app comes equipped with spinning wheels and mystery envelopes that appear from time to time, giving users the chance to win coupons, discounts and cashback deals to spend on the platform.
Winning in these games is always guaranteed, but there is a big catch: usually you have to spend a small amount of money in your pocket or promote Temu to your friends on social media before opening the prize.

At the beginning of this year, we found a men’s belt on sale for less than $6.89 (the same item on other sites costs at least $20) and a suitcase for $43.79 (the same product was around $100 elsewhere).
Covered throughout Temu’s pages are constant sales promotions with discounts reaching up to over 90%, and promises of free shipping.
According to Temu, its low prices are possible because it connects customers directly with the factories that produce its goods, most of which are in China, which allows it to cut out “many dealers” and deliver “wholesale” prices to customers.

But critics charge that Temu’s low prices are not supported by his business model. The media and financial experts abroad allege that the company may be losing money on each order it takes in an effort to remain competitive and build market share.
Temu has said that these suggestions are “not true”. It says its operating model has allowed it to enjoy “tremendous” increases in efficiency, to the benefit of both itself and its customers.

Our survey of 500 users and users of Temu at the end of last year, together with our own experience of buying products on the site, allowed us to gain insight into what it is like to shop at Temu.
While we can confirm that the store has delivered the goods it advertised at the prices it promised, there are some things you should be aware of when using it, as you will read below.
Most of the Temu customers we surveyed bought household or kitchen items (62%) or clothing (50%). Other popular purchases include jewelry and accessories (31%), arts and crafts (28%) and toys and games (27%).

“You get what you pay for” was a common conclusion among consumers, many of whom felt that the quality of the items they purchased matched their expectations – often low.
A large number of users were also happy with how quickly things were delivered, while others said they found Temu’s refund process quick.
Almost 77% of respondents said they would buy from Temu again and 73% said they would recommend it to others.
Customers have often complained about the poor quality of Temu’s clothes. The minority also raised questions about the company’s ethics and the conditions of the workers who make the products they sell.

Some customers have named the user experience of Temu’s website and app as a reason for being upset, saying they are unhappy with the large number of advertising and marketing notifications, messages and emails they have received after using the service.
Some allege that Temu’s product images are misleading, and others say they are concerned about the security of their personal information when using the app.
However, the majority of survey respondents still had a positive experience with Temu, with over three quarters saying they would shop there again.
In our experience shopping at Temu, we found a few issues that we thought could confuse and confuse customers:

After selecting the items to buy, we received several warnings that the items we selected were “almost sold out” or were already in the carts of many other customers.
But the company has not provided any evidence that these products were sold at such high prices on its website.
After we reviewed it for the first time, Temu added a disclaimer to his strike deals, saying they are based on “the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, the price offered by trading partners, or the price offered by other sellers or more. The price in the past 90 days”.

Initially we were given the option to purchase goods as a “guest” without creating an account on the platform. After selecting this and entering the payment and shipping details, we were taken back to the beginning of the checkout process – except this time we had to register an account to continue.
Believes many of Temu’s tactics, especially the use of limited stock indicators and countdown timers, are designed to create a false sense of urgency and are unfair to users.

What Is Temu? Is Temu Legit And Safe To Shop At?
Previous research has found the majority of consumers believe businesses should be fair to them. We call on the government to introduce fair laws to eliminate businesses that aim to cheat or entrap people.
The company says it maintains a “smaller inventory” of products than other platforms so it can adapt to changes in customer demand. As a result, its low-stock-alerts are not “marketing ploys”, it claims, but “real-time indicators” of the sales offer and the status of its inventory.

Recently, we discovered toys being sold on the platform were failing Australian safety standards, with special requirements to safely protect button batteries.

When we recently tested 15 battery-powered products, including children’s watches, lighting equipment and electronic games, all failed at least one of the mandatory regulations designed to prevent children from installing potentially deadly batteries.
We bought the products in May and they have all been removed from Temu’s site, but 12 items were still for sale when we notified the forum about the issues.
Other Temu products we’ve bought have failed to meet the standards in a variety of ways – the hair dryer we bought on the platform in March posed an electrical hazard because it didn’t have the required electrical cord protection (such as a power cord. )
