Human Or Not Game Is Over Heres What The Latest Turing Test Tells Us – More than 30% of people who played the online Turing test game couldn’t tell the difference between a human and an AI.
Named after the computer scientist Alan Turing, the Turing test tries to determine whether a machine can act like a human enough to fool the person performing the test. An online game called Human or not offers humans the same challenge, and now the results are in.
Human Or Not Game Is Over Heres What The Latest Turing Test Tells Us
Launched last month, Human or Not asks you to chat with someone (or something) for two minutes and then try to figure out if it was another person or an AI bot. In accepting the challenge, you can ask any questions or provide any answers you want. But when the two minutes were up, you had to guess who or what was on the other side.
What Is The Turing Test? The Original Version May Not Be Exactly What …
After generating millions of conversations in one of the largest recorded Turing tests, developer AI21 Labs found that 32% of people trying the game couldn’t tell the difference between a human and a bot, leaving 68% who got it right.
Overall, people had an easier time trying to identify another person. When chatting with a person, participants received an answer 73% of the time. But when they talked to the bot, they guessed correctly only 60% of the time.
Out of 17 different countries, France scored the highest percentage of correct predictions at 71%, while India had the lowest score at 63.5%. The United States came in the middle of the pack with 67%, while the UK scored 67.5%, Italy 67%, and Russia 66%.
To challenge its users, Human or Not is an AI bot based on high-level language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 and AI21 Labs’s Jurassic-2. Such LLMs rely on deep learning to help chatbots and other AI tools produce human-like text. Besides using this model, AI21 has developed a framework that will create a unique bot character for each game.
Intelligence Or Imitation? The Turing Test And Artificial Intelligence Debates
Participants resorted to a few tricks to try to separate humans from bots. But with well-trained and knowledgeable AI, those tactics didn’t always work.
If a conversation partner makes spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes or usage of speech, then many people think that it might be a person. However, the game models were specifically trained to make certain mistakes and use slang.
In some cases, participants tried to lead the conversation to current events under the belief that many AIs have time to shut down after not knowing new events. These people ask questions like: “What is the exact date and time where you are?” and “What did you think of Biden’s last speech?” However, most of the models used in the game were connected to the internet and therefore aware of recent news events.
Knowing that the bots clearly do not have a human life, some participants asked personal questions such as “What is your name?” and “Where are you from?” and he refused to respond. But most bots have been able to answer these questions successfully by creating personas based on personal stories in their database.
Has Any Ai Passed The Turing Test?
Using one tactic that may have worked better than others, some participants asked their discussion partner for advice about illegal actions or told them to use offensive language. The idea here is that the AI’s “low behavior patterns” will prevent them from responding to such requests.
In one more interesting strategy, participants assumed that a polite or friendly conversation partner was probably a bot. The point here is that people are often rude and disrespectful, especially on the Internet.
AI21 Labs said it will study the results further and work with other leading AI researchers and labs on the project. The goal is to help the public, researchers, and policy makers alike to better understand AI not only as tools of production but as members of the future of the internet world.
“We started this experiment with basic questions about people’s ability to distinguish between humans and machines, because of the crazy development of AI in the last year or so, and we got answers to that,” said Amos Meron, product lead at AI21. labs and game designer.
Is The Turing Test A Valid Test Of Artificial Intelligence?
“More importantly, though, we now have new and more important questions to think about,” Meron added. “Because at least in some cases people can’t tell the difference, what interaction do people want and need to get online with bots? Do they need to be told that they’re talking to a machine? What policies should we have in place? Of course we don’t have the answers to these questions, but we hope this test helps start the conversation early, because we think the technology will get better soon.

In the original proposed experiment, a person could talk to one person and one machine without seeing them. If they can correctly identify which one it is, then the machine fails the test. But, if it can mimic people so successfully that a human tester can’t tell the difference, it will pass.
Is It Human Or Not? The game takes place during the two-minute text conversation limit. The player exchanges short messages with an unknown party and, at the end of the conversation, must guess whether they were talking to a real person or an AI.

The game is free to play, on a dedicated website, but is only available for a limited time.

Once you get to the home page of Man or not?, you can immediately click the button to start the game.
After a few seconds, the game will match you with another player or an AI bot, and will randomly assign who will start the conversation.

For each message you send, there is a 20 second timer. Once the time has passed, whatever you wrote will be sent, even if you haven’t finished writing. If you don’t write anything, the conversation will end immediately.
Once you’ve exchanged a few messages and the two-minute limit is up, the conversation stops and you won’t be able to talk to the other party again.
Next, you are asked if you want to talk to a human or an AI bot, and you have to choose one. The game will tell you if you got it right or wrong.
But, if it turns out you were talking to someone, you won’t find out if they thought you were a bot or not.

Note, the site cannot control what other people say to you. If you want to report a conversation, tap the three dots in the top right corner of the screen next to the timer. This is where you can leave the game if you don’t want to continue the conversation.
Human or not? also not intended for children under 18 years of age. In the game’s privacy policy, AI21 Labs states that it does not provide products or services for use by children. Children should not provide personal data to the game without the involvement of a parent or guardian.
