You’re trying to take a proper photo with your iPhone or iPad, but you’re having trouble. Maybe you’re having trouble creating a theme. Maybe you’re having a hard time keeping the scene level. None; no need to worry. The Camera app on your device offers several tools to help you better compose and line up your photos.
First, one of the tools I described here was introduced with iOS 17/iPadOS 17. If you haven’t updated your device yet, go to Settings, select General, and tap Software Update. Allow the latest update to download and install.
One of the keys to good photography is knowing where to place your subject. Instead of placing the subject in the center of gravity, placing it off-center often results in a more dynamic shot. And for this you can use the grid on the screen. To enable this tool, go to Settings and select Camera. Under Composition, turn on the switch for Grid.
The Iphone 15 Pro Max Has A Tetraprism Camera—what The Heck Is That?
Open the camera app in portrait or landscape mode and adjust the photo you want to take. You’ll see grid lines on the screen to help you line up the frame. Use them to frame your subject or frame a scene in an interesting way. Take a picture when the scene is drawn the way you want it.
Another trick to taking a good photo is knowing how to angle it. Sometimes you want the scene to be perfect. Other times, you may want it slightly angled. You can refer to the level tool provided with iOS 17/iPadOS 17 to help you here. Go to Settings, select Camera, and then turn on the switch for Level.
Open the Camera app and set to take a photo in portrait or landscape mode. Tilt your iPhone or iPad to an angle. Look in the middle of the screen and you should see a white horizontal line right in the middle with two small lines surrounding it. When your device is perfectly level, the line in the middle will meet the two surrounding lines and turn yellow. You can then use this line as a guide to align your shots or figure out how to align the angle. When you’re ready, take a picture.
Sometimes the most interesting part of a scene happens out of frame. But you’re so focused on what you see through the camera that you don’t pay attention to anything else. An option called View Out of Frame allows you to see things in your photo that you wouldn’t otherwise capture. To enable this, go to Settings, select Camera, and turn on the switch for View Out of Frame.
Iphone 16 Vs. Iphone 16 Pro: Here Are The Biggest Differences
Open the camera app and place your device in portrait or landscape mode. Wait a second and then you should see two areas outside the frame at the top and bottom in portrait mode or the sides in landscape mode. You can now move your device up, down, left, or right to capture a part of the scene that was previously out of frame. When the frame is lined up, take a picture.

However, I was quickly impressed when I saw professional photographer Joe Maldonado shooting in the field with a highly configured iPhone 14 Pro. Even though we took the same photos and used the best phone in Cupertino, Maldonado’s photos came out sharper, sharper and more vivid than mine.
At first I thought the problem was dirty lenses. But even after carefully cleaning the sensors with a microfiber cloth, Maldonado’s photos were far superior to mine.

Here, under Camera Capture, make sure “High Performance” and “24 MP” under “Photo Mode” are checked. Also, make sure “ProRAW & Resolution Control” is enabled.
Make sure there is a check mark next to “ProRAW Max (up to 48 MP)” and JPEG-XL Lossy (the latter is only available for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max).
Make sure the following are enabled: Camera Mode, Creative Controls, Macro Control, Exposure Adjustment, Night Mode, Portrait Zoom, ProRaw and Resolution Control, Live Photo. As the menu name suggests, this ensures that your current settings are saved every time you open the Camera app.
Iphone 15 Vs. Iphone 14: What’s New And Different?
Turn on Grid and make sure Level is turned on. According to Maldonado, these settings help him line up his shots. Also, make sure Portraits in Photo Mode, Shutter Priority, Lens Correction, and Macro Control are turned on.
Also, when taking photos, make sure you hit the ‘1x’ button (the main sensor known as the wide camera) to get the best quality shots.
Now get out there with your newly installed iPhone and let us know in the comments if you notice a difference.
